This piece was from an assignment where we were only given two things to work off of: a title, “As They Live and Breathe”, and a prompt concerning a child dealing with anthropomorphic household objects. Children’s media has always been a great love of mine, so I took inspiration from the media I consumed as a child. Many great cartoons of the early 2000s took stylistic influences from a 50s studio animation look known as the “UPA style”, characterized by a very graphic and simplified, abstract style. I wanted to pay homage to that with my book cover, and so I utilized flat, graphic shapes along with bold lines and colors, as well as an abstract background. My take of the prompt is a child having to deal with her washing machine coming to life, sputtering an insane amount of clothes all over her.
